Who we are
OrganiPharm
is a 100% grower owned company dedicated to producing high quality, environmentally
sustainable botanical products for the health conscious consumer. OrganiPharm’s
leadership in the area of medicinal plant production and processing technology has
been recognized by the USDA and the NIH through a series of Small Business Innovation
Research awards for their work with Hydrastis canadensis, also known as goldenseal.
Through these awards, OrganiPharm has forged strategic relationships with several
major research institutions including Clemson University, the University of Illinois,
Chicago Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy, Rutgers University, and the University
of Georgia resulting in a USDA National Organic Program certified production and
processing method about which the National Institutes of Health has commented “may
become an industry standard for future standardization protocols”.
The good news is that the future is here now!! OrganiPharm’s products combine sustainable
production methods, cutting edge research, reliable potency, and uncompromising
purity to provide you with the highest quality dietary supplements possible. Hydrastis
is forest cultivated on small family farms across the Southeast then centrally processed
in our on-farm Dalton, Ga. facility. OrganiPharm has developed strict controls for
every aspect of production from “seed to shelf” providing you and your family with
unsurpassed quality assurance. OrganiPharm products never leave our control until
shipped to your door.
Now you can enhance your health with Hydrastis without fear of wild population depletion
while at the same time providing support for small family operated farms. It’s a
win-win-win proposition that benefits all, consumers, growers, and the environment.
Mission
OrganiPharm’s mission is to make medicinal plant production a viable economic option
for the small farmer while at the same time providing premium quality natural products
to both consumers and researchers. To accomplish that goal we will produce medicinal
plants and medicinal plant products that are:
- USDA NOP Certified Organic
- Environmentally Sustainable
- Backed by Scientific Research
In addition, we will educate consumers and health care practioners in the safe and
effective use of those products thereby creating demand and ensuring a strong, sustainable
market for the grower/owner of the raw material.
OrganiPharm was formed based on a business plan developed through more than six
years of research. The logic behind the model is simple, if we as growers, produce
raw material, process our raw material into products, and distribute those products
directly to consumers ourselves, then we have bypassed all intermediaries resulting
in increased viability and sustainability for family farmers while providing consumers
with products of unparallel quality.
Regulated by the FDA as a dietary supplement, OrganiPharm’s lead product, Hydrastis
Complete tm, is a USDA NOP certified organic liquid extract which has a beneficial
effect on almost all body systems. Scientifically blended for optimal nutritional
value and bottled in a variety of convenient sizes, it is an easy to use liquid
extract which combines the berberine rich root and rhizome of Hydrastis canadensis
with a myriad of synergistic nutrients found only in the leaf. From maintenance
of optimal digestive tract function and blood glucose levels to enhanced cardio-vascular
performance and mental acuity, Hydrastis Complete tm provides the support the body
needs to operate at peak efficiency.
History of OP
In 1993 Randy and Cindi Beavers realized they would one day be faced with the choice
of either selling her Grandfather’s farm or moving there and attempting to make
a living. After three years researching various crop options, they saw an opportunity
in the area of cultivation of endangered/threatened medicinal plants. Building on
a 20 year interest in this area, they embarked in 1996 on a five year plan to convert
the farm to the certified organic production of medicinal plants. Randy began development
of a “wild simulated” production system for Hydrastis at that time. With very little
published information regarding cultivation of the plant available and few existing
growers willing to share information, Randy submitted a proposal to the USDA SBIR
program entitled Establishing a Viable Organic Goldenseal Production System for
Small Family Farms. This proposal was funded in May 2001 and resulted in the successful
development of such a system. This system was then transferred to interested small
farmers through a series of on-farm workshops and individual mentoring. In May,
2004 an initial meeting of persons interested in forming a cooperative or other
association of medicinal plant growers was held. This meeting was attended by more
than 250 small farmers and landowners with presentations given by Randy plus representatives
from the University of Georgia Center for AgiBusiness and Economic Development and
the USDA's Cooperative Development Specialist for Georgia. 42 small farmers returned
surveys indicating an interest and a steering committee was formed to pursue the
matter further.
Once these growers began planting and a supply of raw material reasonably assured,
it was only logical that optimal methods of post-harvesting handling, drying, and
storage for maintenance of bioactive marker levels be developed as well as assessment
of value added product potential. Therefore a second USDA SBIR project was proposed
entitled Goldenseal, Processing and Value-Added Product Development. This project
is drawing to a close and has resulted in a patent-pending process for standardizing
Hydrastis products to specific levels of bioactivity.
The steering committee continued to meet twice yearly during training sessions through
2006 and decided in October, 2006 to formally organize and begin an effort to raise
sufficient capital to start operations utilizing the process above. A minimum goal
by December 31, 2006 was set and exceeded from 10 growers. Two special meetings
were held in January and February 2007 in order to adopt an operating agreement.
The operating agreement was formally adopted March 1, 2007 and the company began
operations at that time. OrganiPharm will be occupying office and laboratory space
in the Life Sciences Small Business Incubator at the Medical College of Georgia
September 1, 2007.
OrganiPharm is literally setting natural product standards for the new millennium.
